The Art Institute of Washington: I have been incredibly busy teaching at the Art Institute. The school keeps growing which keeps my classes packed with new faces. As the school grows, it also has become more and more organized which has allowed me to fall into a regular schedule and reduce some of my volunteer responsibilities as I gear up to move into Lorton and focus my attention on my portraits and fine art. All-in-all I find that teaching here has helped me to grow as an instructor as well as an artist, and I am glad for this position and all that I have learned in my four years there.

Lorton Workhouse: The Lorton Workhouse is a nerve-racking experience. As they near the end of phase 1 of construction, the time is finally near when I can move my studio out of my crampt 1 bedroom condo. The opening ceremonies are scheduled for mid September, so be sure and keep up to date by visiting www.lortonarts.org. During the ceremonies, be sure to check me out. I will have a tent to display my work, and will be giving several free workshops and lectures the weekend of the 20th in an attempt to pull people into taking classes.

Yavelberg Studios: Besides the move, I have been focusing my attention toward portraiture in an attempt to pad my portfolio for my push for new clients. I have been working on paingings of friends and family and have been practicing demonstrational portrait painting so that I can seem calm and collected when painting in front of a crowd. I am still working on sculpture and other fine art to break from the portraits, and I even produced several photographs. I have updated the website with all current works, so feel free to browse around and find all the new stuff.
Yavelberg Studios

Leslie Nolan

There is no need to waste time comparing Leslie Nolan’s art to the great masters residing in the museums around the world. Nolan’s work is a unique vision of the world around her. I have personally had the pleasure to get to know this wonderful artist and even to exhibit with her; yet every time I see her work on display - I am stunned. Her work is always fresh and deep in expressive gesture. I will also try not to waste time talking about each and every individual piece; as she produces so many all with equal energy. Leslie Nolan’s subject matter is varied, but tend toward the human figure and landscape, never seeming to combine the two. In this show she tends to separate the two ideas as she continually experiments with the design possibilities of each.

It is this experimentation that makes Nolan’s work unique. She never seems to hesitate with her designs. Her unrestricted use of color in many paintings shoves into the face of many viewers her possibility. She will use a palette of neon colors for one image, and then swiftly move to a somber achromatic vision of a similar design for the next. It is this willingness that expresses her range and her deep understanding of the artistic process. In her landscapes she seems to experiment with this idea of color. She keeps the same composition in several of her landscapes, but varies her color choices and shows them all to the viewer. Is it times of day, or is she just playing?

Nolan would like you to feel the sense of playfulness in many of her paintings, but the truth is that she wants to be taken seriously. It is hard to find playfulness in many of her paintings of the figure. The stances of the figures are typically contemplative and strong. Her palette is more deliberate, and her mark is always expressive. People become shadows or visions of the world in which Nolan lives, observations of the physical as well as mental state in which we also live. The figures tend to a sort of isolation, while her mark is aggressive and present.

The work that she presents borders between the abstract and the figurative. One cannot place her work on either side of that fence. Though a subject might be easily read in many of her works, her understanding of color and gesture allow her to pull out deeper meanings from her compositions that imbue her subjects with that more psychic or emotional impact. Her figurative sense appeals to the viewer’s relationship to the world in which they live. The viewer is forced to connect with the figures, their gestures, their contemplation. The abstract color, the play of warm versus cool, or the highly keyed color schemes will play to the viewer’s emotions as well, completing the presence of the painting.

Nolan’s work is always astounding. Her paintings could be said to pull from such a wide gamut of 20th century art, that it becomes difficult to begin listing them all. It is better said, that these are “Nolans” and should be taken as such. Only someone with a personality like hers and willingness to fail (though let us hope it never happens) can create works as great as these that appeal to such a broad and adoring audience. I am still glad to have had the pleasure to exhibit with her in the past. Hopefully I will be able to do so again in the future.

I recieved two portrait commissions, attended the National Portrait Society Annual Conference. Got some great information on how I can improve and move ahead with my career... And I WON AN AMAZING EASLE! Ok, I wish I could have won something that wasn't just raffled off, but I will use this prize to focus on next year's conference. I want to place among the finalists if possible.

So, that said, I am going to devote most of this next year toward developing my portrait craft. I will be seeking out individuals to capture in my personal style. This will mean that I probably will be asking amny of my friends and hopefully begin approaching random high profile individuals to have sit for my portraits. This doesn't mean that I will be giving these paintings away. It just means that I think I need more of a portfolio after looking around at the work at the conference.

I believe that I am as good, if not better than many of the people there (or at least I have the potential to be). I also know that I have less of a portfolio because I was probably one of the youngest, if not the youngest member there.

Anyway, I would like to thank the portrait society for holding that convention and again express how great an opportunity it was.
Yavelberg Studios

Ok, back to the rambling posts while I find time to research more meaningful ones....

I am currently on break from one school and teaching mainly in the evenings at another. It is difficult work with very few breaks, and they both demand a lot of extra effort on my part. Currently I am working on figuring out how I plan to approach my classes at the Art Institute next quarter.

I have taught two of these courses before, but I belive I haven't recieved the quality of work from the students that I desire. I plan to change these two up to allow for more time on projects and hopefully more solid work through critique. I believe that if you give a student too little time and overload them with too much information, then the quality seems to go down drastically in their work. Also, since I was lazy about critique last quarter, I belive this also hurt the quality of work that was produced. Students need a little kick in the ass to get their stuff done.

The other class I have been faced with (and yes, another class that is new for me. You'd think that I had taught everything at this point) is Visual Form and Content. I believe this course is right up my alley, but it has been a challenge to come up with ideas for projects. I really want to grab these students and shake them up a bit to see what they can produce.

It seems to me that this class is based off the idea of stressing the design process to produce outcomes that are unique to their content. It also stresses the importance of the artist statement. As many know, this is something I do hold in high importance as well in my work as can be seen in the many artist statements that accompany my work online. This is an area that students fall short as they are mainly visual learners and forget the importance of being able to talk about their work. Yes, a work of art should be able to speak for itself, but if the artist doesn't know how to talk about it, then how is their work supposed to really have any content.

Anyway, this post seems quite random after not posting in so long, but I assure you that it won't as I begin talking and joining the world again. Keep looking back for interesting statements towards my life.
Yavelberg Studios

Well, my website is up and running and I have been getting some good feedback. One thing I have been asked to add is a listing of available works with prices (adendum: I did a quick and easy version which is up and running). This might take awhile to add, but I do intend to get to that.

Also, I have had an itching to get back to critical writing. I feel I have been neglecting these skills and should get back to it. I of course am opinionated and need to get those opinions out.

The first main commentary will definately be about the state of nudity in the contemporary art scene. You think this would be a non-issue, but I encounter strong reactions to my classical nudes at many of the venues I show. I have since decided not to show at venues that do not allow for nudes as that is the direction some of my artwork has been going. I inted to write a lot more on this issue as I believe it is important.
Yavelberg Studios

Once again, it has been awhile since I have posted. It will be running for the next three months, so I hope this generates some interest in our commissioned work.

I also recently have been given the opportunity to monitor an open drawing session in Reston at the Lake Ann community center which will be held every other Thursday and I will publish the info for that soon.

Shows:
I will be showing in the AiW faculty show starting early in February. Again, I will post all the info on the main page soon.

I have also been struggling through many paintings at the moment. I appologize for not showing anyone what I have been up to, but the struggle for an artist with his own work can be a tough one. As of late it has been an up-hill battle with no deadlines and lots on my mind. I have a ton of great paintings stuck up in my brain, I just have to find the time and energy to pump them out. Stay with me and I will update soon with a couple of new paintings that are very near completion.
Yavelberg Studios

Artomatic 2004-

Artomatic went well and I recieved much praise from my friends, but overall, the show was not that important. The show did have many amaturish artists as the critics stated, and their work did reflect a lot of what the show was about. An unjurried show this large in DC is not so much about the art in the end as it is the act of getting the artistic community together to celebrate what they do as a living or just as a hobbie. I noticed that a lot of my cards dissapeared which could be a good thing as I am looking for commissions to keep me busy during the holliday break from AiW.

One poet went around the show and wrote small poems about works that inspired her. She left the following poem to Park Bench, Daily Commute and Lunch Break:

Intimacy

Only when you think
you're alone
do you smile to yourself
or your cell phone.

In other news, I will probably be moving into the Dupont Circle area for a month or so as I house-sit for the Coles. I believe that I will have use of Robert's amazing studio to work through some of the cold winter months as I take care of his townhouse a block away. I plan to be working my fingers to the bone producing paintings. I have a few more paintings lined up for my Technological Genre series as well as a portrait I wish to do even though the buyer might not be on the hook yet. There is also a new series of paintings I wish to crank out about a billiards game focusing on color and composition as well as the interaction of the figures centered around this game.

I will post more pictures as I take them, but keep in mind that I am looking for more work, so pass on the news.
Yavelberg Studios

Next show where you can catch more of my Technological Genre series:

I am extremely excited for this opportunity to teach Drawing, Design, and Color Theory, but I have been anxious the past week because they gave me literally that long to prepare for classes yesterday. I'm doing my best to catch up on the material and keep students interested. It's only been a day, but the experience has already taught me a lot about what I need to be doing to prepare for classes and such. Looks like the library is once again my home.

Our plan thusfar is to create an interesting mailer that will allow designers to access our portfolio and perhaps expand our client base. We would like to find more designers in the DC area, but we are also willing to work anywhere so long as flight expenses are paid.

I created an interactive CD / buisness card. I think it is probably the easiest way for designers to browse. It is basically this website converted to CD format so that they don't have to deal with the sometimes slow download times of the internet.

In other news, JOSHYAVELBERG.COM WILL SOON MOVE!!! Thats right, very shortly I will be moving the whole site to YAVELBERGSTUDIOS.COM. I will try and keep an active transition page for awhile, but sometime next week, don't be suprised when it happens.
Yavelberg Studios

I am adding a new section under "Gallery, Commissions" entitled "Parsons Designs" to allow space for images from Cheryl Parsons Designs portfolio so that people will be able to have more ideas to view from. I had helped on several of the projects, but I believe they need a section of their own. I may have to make subcategories here too, but I don't want it to become too confusing.

Also, I wanted to post the last portrait I completed. It is in the gallery, but here is a closer look:

This painting is of my cousin, Kris Parsons. I was commissioned to do it after our last family reunion. He loves his motorcycles and has a knack for doing wheelies.

I love the story about his competative drag racing. He wanted to do it so badly, but his mother wouldn't really condone it. So he got a motorcycle and did it anyway. His mother of course found out and went to see a race. Apparently he was so damn good that nobody could touch him. On the green in the first race, he pealed out as the other guy took off, then pulled his bike into a wheelie and raced past his opponent the whole quarter mile on one wheel. Needless to say, my aunt was pissed, but said she would get him a drag car because she would rather have four wheels under him than one.

Anyway, there's the painting. Click on it for a larger view.
Yavelberg Studios

Buisness has been slow lately, but I believe things will pick up soon enough. Cheryl Parsons, my mother has decided to merge her buisness with Yavelberg Studios to put her experience at my buisness' disposal. We plan to approach designers and future clients with a new brocure. I have been considering making a cd of our updated webpage along with a page brocure. Her experience will really help when approaching these clients and it will also add a lot of images to our commissions gallery.

I am also going to update the Cole journal about our last project, "Thought." I will have to make a photo slide show, so it should be ready sometime later tonight.

Well I don't have a fever, but I think I have inhailed too much bronze. So I have a sore throat and am exhausted from our last few days of work. We did finish the sculpture though, so it will be viewable in Merriweather Post Pavilion after Monday or on my website as I figure I will get to updating Cole Journal sometime soon.

So tonight I have my halls cough drops, honey maid applecinnamon sticks and plenty of beer to watch movies and take it easy and catch up on the past few days, more specifically, "Warped Tour, An Adventure on the Scale of Lord of the Rings."

As any good story should start, once upon a time, this one doesn't. This adventure started for me sometime a few months ago when I wandered into Herndon's Friday Night Live on a tip that it would be a good time. It wasn't a bad time, and the Budwiser sponsor definately helped the situation. The town green was covered with little kids and their parents listening to safe music while the mini-parents were running around playing tag and throwing balls. It was a mission to pass without getting hit by the halflings, but stepping over wasn't too big a deal. After dark, they mostly cleared out so that the drunker hoodlems decided to move closer to the stage.

Somewhere along the line I passed by the DC 101 both and droped my name in their bucket and picked up a CD of Elliot in the Morning music recordings just to be thrown asside when I return home. After such an exciting night I move over to the local bar. I have become sort of a regular at the place, knocked back a few, played some pool, was warned about the police checkpoints and where they were. It was a fun different drive back home that night.

A few days later, I get a call on my way home from a long ass day of work. "Is this Josh Yavelberg"
"Yes it is"
"This is (insert girl's name) from DC 101 calling to inform you that you won tickets to Warped Tour"
"Wow... great... unexpected... who's playing?"
"Hell if I know, you can pick them up at the station."

So a few weeks later I get the time after work to head up to Rockville, MD in order to pick up the tickets. I would go into detail, but the whole experience was not very exciting except for the pinball machine in the lobby. And Rockville was a very uninteresting part of town with a lot of traffic.

Fast forward.

I bring the tickets up to the light so that the date would become legible. The all day show is on a Wednesday in August. The problems become clear the all day event would be held on a Wednesday. The evil plan becomes clear. The dark forces wanted me to attend a event that would be filled with posing beings just larger than halflings but not yet the size of full adults. Teenagers that would zoom around and look very tempting just to piss me off because it would be against ethics and law to get close to them. I needed a fellowship to avoid such dangers. Most of my friends were going to be working as they had full time jobs. Who was to help me with such a burden?

I asked everyone, but all with the same result. I finally decide with one week left that there was no way to get out of this and I had to let go of the extra ticket. So I did what the noble thing and I put it up on LJ as a free give-away. I got two desperate people right off the bat. The first was the obvious winner and was an obvious flake as we exchanged messages back and forth with no resolution as to how she wanted to pick the tickets up. I guess she thought of me as an interent stalker who would rape and/or kill her if we met.

So, its Tuesday, the day before the big event and I still don't have a definate on the other ticket. Would anyone step up to the challenge of heading into teenage infested crowds? I posted once more and to someone I thought would have free time that day... Mearth . (A good solid adventure name.)

Mearth thus joins OpiusRex on a quest of utmost importance, to go into the bowels of teenage infested concert and deliver the tickets to the vendors and find the beer to help cope with all dangers that it may entail.

It's now Wednesday morning. I pick up Mearth on an easy trip and head for the forwarned traffic of 66 west. And we fell into it a few miles before our exit. We were stuck behind the "Big Truck" and in front of coke snorting punks. But the conversation was delightful and got us through the tough times towards our destination, the ticket takers.

We find the parking lot and head for the entrance. We see a line of teenagers in the distance, "Is that a line to get in?" Mearth asks.
"I hope not, maybe it is for tickets, I don't think it is sold out."

We lucily pass through the line undetected by the rabid teens waiting in line forever in the hot sun, tickets still in hand. We then are faced with "The Searchers."

The searchers were not forgiving as we decided to bring a bag with extra goodies such as a blanket, frisbee, water... And of course we had to return across the desert-like parking lot to the car to put the items back to return to the searchers without any items not allowed in an event differing from other events at the venue.

We finally accomplish our mission of returning the tickets to their source, but it seemed that the problems were only half over.

Thus begins The Warped Tour, Quest for Beer.

Warped Tour, Quest for Beer will be added later as it is late and time to return to beer drinking and snack eating.

......................................

So now it is time to finish the adventure... "Warped Tour, The Quest for Beer"

We entered into Nissan Pavilion faced by the obvious, Nissans. Several cars and sponsors were crowded around the enterance way. Three radio stations (all probably owned by the evil, dark Clear Channel Radio) were pushing their advertising merchendise on the teenagers as they buzzed in every direction. The whole area was quite confusing, but we could hear music off in the distance so Mearth and I headed to the sound.

The large grass hill was closed off so the path led to two main stages that had been errected in the parking area on top of gravel. Dust was everywhere, kicked up by the boots and sneakers of trendy pre-frosh as they scooted from vendor to vendor to spend their parents money on crap. We passed by the "reverse day-care center" where parents were dropped off by their kids in a tent cared for by younger supervision. They all looked so unhappy as they lacked any real alcoholic nourishment.

We wandered the path passing by several giants, inflated for everyone's amusement, guarding activities that were free for all. I actually liked these giants with their mohawks, but I wasn't about to partake in their fun without a few beverages in me, and Mearth quickly agreed. The buzzing was becoming overwhemimg, the heat was scorching, and there was no way to blend in as we were obviously on the older side. It was this last fact that snapped my attention to the fact that alcohol was not within any viewing radius. Panic nearly set in.

Before I was about to grab the nearest halfling and shake the information out of them, Mearth and I decided to make it a quest, to find the beer at a mostly underage event. We decided there had to be beer, and it must be sold at the concessions, but where? We wandered to the first vendor, only bottled water. There was Winterfresh gum, slim jims, and probably some edible underwear lying around, but no site of a vendor that was serving alcohol, and the giants just mocked us at this point. They knew where it was, they could see over everyone to the destination, but their inflatable lips just smiled and didn't give up the secret.

We ventured past the second giant closer to the pavilion stage where there were bathrooms, and permanent consession stands, but the taps were dry and the cashiers had no clue if there was any beer at this event. Our hopes began diminishing. We waded through the mini punks to the other concessions that had a sign for frozen margaritas, a tempting sight as the sun was beginning to wear us down, but the sign was mearly a mirage, taunting us to a product that didn't exist.

All hope seemed lost, what were we to do. If there was no beer here I don't think I would be able to continue the length of the concert with jail-bait running all around me. We happend upon an ancient, someone nearly our age, but seemingly old enough to drink, thinking they may have a clue to lead us to our much needed refreshments. The ancient pointed back to the enterance. We thought it was all over, we would have to leave to get drunk.

The ancient then clarified that it was by the enterance, there would be a tent, and in that tent would be the oaisis that we saught. We were saved.

We pushed through the crowds, the weight of the sun bearing down on my like never before, the sweat of every passer by pulling me down. Mearth reached back and grabbed my hand so that I wouldn't be overtaken by the sweaty munchkins and pulled me through as we made our way back to where we started.

We reached the entrance, the tent was nowhere to be seen. A mirror image of the concessions from the other side of the pavilion lay waiting for our money but no beer was for sale. Was it invisible, could it only be conjoured by those who were most in need, was it just another mirage?

Then we finally saw the tent. Rising behind the concessions and tucked away down an allyway guarded by Clear Channel henchmen stopping the youngsters from getting near. We were saved. We entered cautiously to find one beer vender with two taps, Budwiser and Miller Lite both at $7.50 a cup. The prices were outragous to be sure, but when in need...

We now knew our plight to be different. We wouldn't have enough money to get to our much desired inebreated state. We did become aware that many in the tent had already ventured to that state and were becoming louder with every sip. Donnielle from DC 101 came in shortly after and riled the drunks up even more. We could either deal with people much more drunk than us or head back out into the concert. We had two beers each and decided to headed back out until we could gather more money.

We stopped by the first grinning punk giant and decided to give a go at his maze. An extremely small rugrat was scurrying around the maze like it was his only mission in life. Mearth decided to give it a go first against the little creature, only to fail miserably at beating the little thing. She did finish, and managed not to sustain further injury to her already injured neck. I, on the other hand, took on a teenager who seemed determined to beat me. I too have had a recent injury to my knee and was wondering how fast I could manuver around the obstacles the maze contained. I pulled through with only one fall flat on my face to dive by and tie the opposition.

We needed more beer.

It was now a search for the ATM. With all the vendors scattered about, this place was certain to have an ATM. Even little kids with no jobs know how to spend their parents money by the truckload. We again took the direction of the main pavilion figuring it had to be close to the permanent vendors. I don't like asking for directions, like any normal guy, so it took a few minutes of us swooping around like vulchers before Mearth pulled aside and asked a worker picking up the garbage. The worker pointed us in the direction of lemonade, which we wouldn't have minded, but we wanted beer. He said that it was beside the lemonade stand, and we headed off.

A few minutes later and we were dragging ourselves back to the beer tent to drink our overpriced beers. After waiting in a long line behind nasty people spitting tobacco. We got two more beers each and decided not to wait in the 15 min. line again for more, and hung out in the shade avoiding the teenagers still trying to get into the tent. We thought we were safe, but every so often we found one breaking through to talk to a friend or parent who had been trying to avoid them alltogether.

The rest of the event consisted of a lot of wandering and becoming drenched in other people's sweat. We watched skateboarders on the half pipe doing tricks, little girls flying through the air as they crowd surfed, and a couple of good bands playing the songs that are always heard on the radio. I had come to see Flogging Molly and I wasn't leaving until I had at least one run at pushing around the little ones in a pit. So we stayed until such a point. We were standing in the middle of the crowd waiting for Flogging Molly to start, and when they did, the chaos opened all around us. I was able to move Mearth out of the way as I began pushing my way in the mosh pit to good old Irish punk rock.

We decided to leave at this point and head home after the countless hours of dealing with little people buzzing around in the hot sun. No sooner do we leave than the thunderstorms set in turning the whole event into a giant mud puddle. We left just in time.

I had a wonderful time as I already have said, but the drive back was grueling due to the many hours of downpour that we had to drive through.

Gainesville was fun. I was able to hang with Austin for a bit and just relax like old times (except that Austin neither drinks alcohol or coke anymore). He did however get me interested in live journal, a web journal community that has smaller communities that seem to bring people together depending on interest. Anyway, a bunch of my buddies are using it, so I thought I would contribute and stay in better touch with my friends, trouble is it doesn't publish to my website like blogger, so I will either have to keep both up or drop blogger and link to this new live journal.

I'll give it time before I make any decisions because I feel too lazy right now to do all the HTML editing.
Yavelberg Studios

Josh in the sunshine state...

Back in sunny South Florida. The weather has been great, the girls beautiful, and me jealous. But I know that I would never like to live down there again, the atmosphere is just not my style, though it can be for a week. I was able to visit with a lot of old friends, see some familiar places which are no longer familiar, and understand that Miami isn't what it used to be.

Louis Ulman, my old mentor was somewhat of an inspiration while I was visiting. He now teaches at Art Institute Miami, and has been trying to convince me to come down and teach there with him. I would of course except for the fact that it is Miami, a town which I have had quite enough with. But he did enlighten me to the fact that there is a branch of the Art Institue in Washington, and they are always looking for qualified drawing instructors and historians. Two qualifications which I happen to meet. So it is back to DC, where I will apply for a teaching position for Fall or perhaps Spring in order to raise more money for the property I wish to buy.
